오클랜드 북쪽 토베이의  와이 에이키 비치 더 토르 (The Tor at Waiake Beach in Torbay) - 2013-07-21

롱베이 리져날 파크에서 5분 거리의 아름답고 알찬 공원.

This is Waiake Beach at Torbay in the East Coast Bays of the North Shore of Auckland. Waiake is the Maori name meaning water from

 

below, named for the mineral spring which bubbled up from the rocks and supplied the only fresh water for miles along the coast. (There is no spring of water to be found now)

This sandy beach is very popular and is a safe place to swim and yacht. Waiake beach has a good sailing club - Torbay Sailing Club and even in winter there are often many young sailors training out on the water with their yachts (none this day though!!). There is a large grassy picnic area and when the tide is out you can walk around the rocks to The Tor.

The Tor, Torbay's namesake can be seen straight out from Waiake Beach. The Tor is tapu (meaning 'forbidden' or 'restricted') to Maori and according to legend, a beautiful girl called Moeora often sat at the edge of the cliff, singing with the tuis and weaving mats for her father, an old Maori chief. one day the edge of the cliff fell away beneath her and she was killed on the rocks below (personally, it seems like a fairytale to me).

This was taken in July this year, in the middle of our winter in New Zealand; but in Auckland it doesn’t get as cold as it does down south. It is 2.40pm in the middle of the afternoon, and the weather is fine and sunny. You can see people walking around the rocks by the Tor. A boat is just being towed in from a day’s fishing, and there are families playing with balls on the beach. And there’s a dog swimming too, and another by the little creek on the left.

I lived here (it is only 20 kms from where I live now) for many years and we, as a family, spent many happy times down here at this beach, playing and  swimming.

역시 무인 관광섬 랑기토토(Ranggitoto Is)를

배경삼아 아름답게 보이는 그 곳.
