앞으로 비즈니스석 예약은 필요 없는 것일까. 세상을 변화시킨 코로나19 팬데믹에서 벗어나면서 뉴질랜드 국적 항공사(Air New Zealand)가 이코노미석에 침대를 놓는다는 소식에 여행객들의 관심이 뜨겁다고 한다.

Glovetrender(July 7th 2022)에 의하면 에어 뉴질랜드가 스카이네스트(Skynest)라는 이름의 침대 객실을 2024년말까지 도입할 예정이라고 전했다.

스카이네스트는 프리미엄 이코노미석과 이코노미석 사이의 좌석 일부를 제거하고 만든 수면 공간으로 6개의 침실을 마련해 구획을 나눴다고 한다.

스카이네스트는 총 3층으로 이뤄졌으며 각 층에는 분리된 공간에 2개의 침대가 있다. 각 수면 구역에는 베개, 침구, 귀마개, 형광등, USB 포트 등 편안한 수면을 도울 물품을 마련했다.

에어 뉴질랜드 홍보 담당자는 “승객은 추가 비용을 내고 최대 4시간 동안 스카이네스트를 이용할 수 있다”며 “

스카이네스트를 도입하기 위해 수면 주기 연구를 조사한 결과 일반적인 수면 주기는 약 90분으로 최대 4시간이 이상적인 시간”이라고 밝혔다.

관계자에 따르면 스카이네스트 비용은 현재까지 정해지지 않았으나 4시간에 약 400달러~500달러(약 53만6000원~약 67만원) 사이로 책정할 전망이라고 한다.

그렉 포란 에어 뉴질랜드 최고 경영자(Greg Foran, Air New Zealand’s chief executive)는 “스카이네스트는 이코노미 비행의 인식을 바꿔놓을 혁신적인 공간”이라며 “에어 뉴질랜드는 장거리 여행을 주도하는 항공사이기 때문에 고객이 충분한 휴식을 취할 수 있도록 하는 데 중점을 뒀다”고 말했다.

실제로 에어 뉴질랜드는 미국 뉴욕 JFK 공항에서 출발해 뉴질랜드 오클랜드 공항까지 가는 비행 편을 운항 중인데, 이 항공편은 세계에서 4번째로 긴 항로로 약 17시간 동안 쉬지 않고 운행한다.

에어 뉴질랜드는 2024년 새로 도입할 기종인 보잉 787 드림 라이너 8대에 스카이네스트를 설치할 예정이다.

그러나 머지않아 장거리 노선중 하나인 오클랜드-인천 비행구간 투입여부 언급은 없었지만 가까운 시일내 투입되지 않을까 전망해본다.

Air New Zealand has announced that both economy and premium economy passengers will soon be able to recline in its forthcoming Skynest bunk beds.

A “world first”, Air New Zealand’s revolutionary Skynest bunk bed concept is completely new, and for the first time will allow economy class passengers to lie-flat on long-haul flights.

Although travellers will still need to book a seat in economy or premium economy, they will also have the option to pay for one a four-hour slot in a bunk bed so that they can sleep more comfortably. Prices have not yet been revealed.

Bunk beds in the Skynest will each have a mattress and sheets that will be changed by cabin crew after each booking, as well as a privacy curtain, USB charging and ventilation outlets.

They will also be tripple-stacked to take advantage of the height of the cabin.

Five economy seats will be removed to make space for six of the Skynest bunk beds onboard the eight Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners that Air New Zealand will take delivery of from the end of 2024.

Unfortunately, this means the bunks will not be available for the launch of Air New Zealand’s direct flights between Auckland and New York in September 2022 – a journey that is expected to take more than 17 hours.

The airline will also resume its Auckland to Chicago service in October.

Greg Foran, Air New Zealand’s chief executive, has been quoted as saying the bunk-style beds will be “a real game-changer for the economy travel experience”.

He says: “New Zealand’s location puts us in a unique position to lead on the ultra-long-haul travel experience.

We have zeroed in on sleep, comfort and wellness because we know how important it is for our customers to arrive well-rested.

Whether they are heading straight into a meeting, or to their first holiday hotspot – they want to hit the ground running.”

Leanne Geraghty, the airline’s chief customer and sales officer, says: “Research shows us the first night away from home is the hardest to get a good night’s sleep so everything we do onboard is to help create a sense of calm – from the lighting and sleep ritual including sleepy teas and balms, to the healthier food choices and breathable fabrics.”
