2023년 6월 21일 북섬 최대 스키장 루아페후 스키장 청산 결정, 분할 매각될 듯, 아쉽지만 시즌 개장도 현재 불투명...

북섬 중부에서 화카파파(Whakapapa)와 투로아(Tūroa) 등 2개의 대형 스키장을 운영하는 ‘루아페후 알파인 리프츠(Ruapehu Alpine Lifts, RAL)’가 공식적으로 청산 절차를 밟게 됐다.
 
6월 21일(수) 오전에 회사 측은 오클랜드 고등법원에 출두했으며 존 피스크(John Fisk)와 리처드 네이시(Richard Nacey)가 청산인으로 임명됐다.

북섬 중부에서 큰 고용업체 중 하나인 RAL은 지난해 4500만 달러를 빚을 감당하지 못하고 법정 관리에 들어간 바 있다.

이에 따라 ANZ 은행을 비롯한 채권자와 평생회원권 소지자, 직원, 기업혁신고용부 등 수천 명의 이해 관계자들이 하루 전날 세 가지 방안을 놓고 투표한 결과 결국 청산을 결정했다.

지난주 나온 법정 관리 보고서에서는 상황이 절망적이기 때문에 회사를 경영진에게 반환하는 방안이 최악의 시나리오라고 경고한 바 있다.

하지만 ‘화카파파 홀딩스’의 데이브 메이지(Dave Mazey)는, 자신의 지분 파트너가 청산 후 거래가 될 수 있도록 희망하고 있으며 자신들은 북섬 중부 지역사회를 위해 스키장을 개장하고 사업체를 다시 운영하고자 노력하고 있다고 언론에 전했다.

그는 자연보존부(DOC)와 지역 마오리 부족이 면허(licenses)를 마무리하는 중이라면서, 며칠 안에 회사가 하려는 화카파파 스키장 인수를 막는 건 아무것도 없다고 덧붙였다.
 
화카파파 홀딩스는 RAL의 전 CEO였던 메이지와 투자회사인 ‘사우스 아일랜드 오피스(South Island Office)’의 합작으로 만들어진 회사이다.
 
또한 ‘퓨어 투로아(Pure Tūroa)’ 측도 인수에 나설 의향을 보인 가운데 청산 절차를 진행 중인 PwC 측은 청산인이 임명되면 퓨어 투로아 및 화카파파 홀딩스와 매도 협상을 진행할 것이라고 밝혔다.

정부도 지역 마오리 부족과 긴밀히 협력해 가까운 장래에 면허를 퓨어 투로아와 화카파파 홀딩스 측에 부여할 수 있도록 준비하고 있는 것으로 전해졌다.

또한 PwC는 법원 결정 이후 청산인으로서 사업을 운영하며 RAL 직원은 고용이 유지되고 급여도 중단되지 않는데, 하지만 이번 시즌에 스키장을 개장할지 여부는 여전히 불투명하다.

As you know RAL entered into voluntary administration in October last year. On Tuesday RAL creditors voted on proposals to continue running the company under a Deed of Company Arrangement OR  liquidate it and immediately sell it to two private bidders - one to operate Whakapapa and the other Turoa.

Neither of these proposals were passed and the company will now be handed back to the RAL directors to be liquidated.
The voluntary administrator has said that the two private bidders are still interested in purchasing the skifields and he is hopeful there will be a season this year if the DOC concessions for the skifields can be assigned to the new operators. 

Please do not look at the outcome with doom & gloom.  Yes it was a set back, but looking at the bigger picture the government, community and most Iwi recognise the economic importance of the ski fields and are committed to keeping them running. 

Whoever emerges as the operator of Whakapapa won’t have the debt that RAL had and probably will be focussed only on Whakapapa which will be good for clubs. 


There is still a reasonable likelihood of a ski season this year, we just need to be patient while we wait for more information to emerge.
