2023년 6월 27일 "루아페후 스키장" 정부지원으로 날씨 허락되면 7월 1일부터 부분개장 예정.

뉴질랜드 북섬 최대 스키장 루아페후(와카파파,투로아) 스키장이 법원의 청산결정으로 결정이 나왔지만 정부의 500만달러 긴급 자금지원으로 가까스로 2023년 시즌개장을 한다고 오늘 연락을 받았다.

당일권은 6월 29일(금)부터 판매를 하고 "2023년 시즌권"은 7월 3일(월)부터 온라인 통해서 판매를 한다고 발표했다. 물론, 스키장 개장은 아직 적설량이 충분하지는 않지만 매일 눈이 내리고 있어서 요번 토요일 7월 1일부터 부분 개장을 한다고 한다.

그렇지만 나는 오클랜드에서 혼자 고군분투하며 겨울 시즌을 실내스키장 전전하며 지내고 있는 현재로선 그 머나먼 그곳(500Km)까지 차를 끌고 올시즌 필드 처녀스킹을 다녀야하나 하는 말설임이 앞서고 있는 것이 현실이다.

Government Announcement: Regional Development Minister Kiri Allan has announced a loan of $5M that now allows the court-appointed liquidator (PwC) to trade the 2023 ski season. This move provides much needed certainty for staff, local businesses and the wider region. The support will also allow time for a proper process to be conducted that can consider a wider range of proposals for the long-term future of the skifields.

Waatea News: Reported that “The proposal from Te Ariki Tā Tumu Te Heuheu on behalf of Tūwharetoa is in addition to the expressions of interest received from Whakapapa Holdings and Pure Tūroa.” said Minister for Regional Development Hon Kiritapu Allan. “I have asked MBIE to engage with the bidders to determine the best outcome for RAL’s creditors, the Crown, the local economy and community.

NewsHub: Reported "I have expressed on behalf of my Cabinet colleagues my extreme disappointment with the way this matter has been dealt with. I don't think it has been an appropriate process by MBIE officials working in the region, it needed to be a lot more communicative and collaborative along the way," she said. Allan said the bid from Tūwharetoa was disclosed to the voluntary administrator and to MBIE, but she wasn't made aware of it. "I decided to go up and see for myself whether the right people had been engaged at the right level and they have not been. I am not pleased with the process to date," Allan said. "You need hapū and iwi on board to manage the transfer of the concessions. I needed to make sure the commercial bids put up would withstand all the various hurdles and I was not convinced they would."

The Stakeholders Association is incredibly pleased that that Government has stepped up to allow the 2023 ski season to go ahead and give certainty to staff, local businesses and community, and at same time allowing more time for a proper process that ensures sufficient community consultation on the decision-making for the long-term future of the skifields. Thank you for sticking with us. But an even bigger thanks needs to go to the team at RAL, for whom this summer has been a bit of a mystery and misery at times. While itlooks like part of that is set to carry on a bit longer yet, we’ll now be ableto focus on what is right in front of us, hosting you for a great winter 2023.This is good news and should allow us all to remember why we are here- the loveof this maunga.

My favouritestatistic of this summer came in learning that our permanent team members atRAL add up to a total tenure of around 500 years, with just over 10 years eachon average- that we have managed to hold on to this team through summer isamazing and it is testament to their tenacity and passion for Mt Ruapehu. On September1st we also tick up 70 years of RAL.

We are se tto open both Tūroa and Whakapapa from July 1st as conditions and weather allows. We’ve not had that much snow yet but it’s looking like we will get some falling into and over opening weekend. Enough to kickstart that winter feeling at the very least.

It is normal for us to be gradually phasing lifts and terrain into opening across July and even into August. With this earlier opening, we are also planning to operate more lifts at Tūroa when compared against our initial plan at the start of summer, in other words, we are now working to a plan of more lifts, more of the time. The only lift that will stay out of plan is the Nga Wai Heke- it has some maintenance work outstanding but there is a small chance it becomes an option later in the season. All other lifts on both sides are on track to open as soon as they are able.

At this stage, our team sizes are smaller than in some previous years, they are great in some areas and light in others, but we intend to continue to recruit and to ramp up to meet our new plan and demand.

We are aiming to have day passes available for purchase online from Thursday 29thJune, and all going well, on Friday, we will be able to update you on a season pass offer which would be planned to go on sale on Monday 3rd July!

Lastly, one small matter…while RAL operates the season, Life Passes will remain active and useable.
